"Last chance to look at me."
- Look At Me Achievement description
Eyes is a supporting hostile entity in DOORS, appearing in The Hotel And The Mines. Eyes has a chance to spawn once the player opens the door to a new room. It can teleport in The Mines.
Appearance
Eyes appears as a cluster of multiple eyes of varying sizes and colors. Its shape resembles that of a human eye. It emits a dark bluish-purple aura around its general shape.
Eyes appears a a cluster of a floating eyes that open and close randomly. It has no aura or glow unlike its newer version.
The lookman/Version 1 of eyes bears a resemblance to the entity Halt.
They are the same as version 3, with the only exception being their sparks/glow having a different rate in movement and rotation. They also still have the light surrounding them.
Behavior
Eyes has a chance to spawn when a player opens a door to the next room. Upon spawning, it will emit a blue-purplish glow and be inactive for around a second, giving players time to react, after the grace period it will rapidly shoot any player that looks at it.
Eyes appears to have two hitboxes: the main hitbox that deals 10 damage-per-shot when looked at and the secondary (larger) hitbox that deals 5 damage-per-shot when looked at.
Within The Mines, Eyes was given the ability to teleport, with the chance to appear in front of the player and give them damage. (this is also found in one of the scrapped modifiers for Eyes). Eyes will despawn when the next door is opened, but have a chance to spawn twice (or more) in a row, swiftly move to the next room, leaving a trail behind.
Eyes will flash white aura upon damaging the player, if the player dies they will pull the player's eyes towards them and decapitate the player.
Notes
- Eyes' aura color is randomized, it can be either purple or blue.
- Eyes' ambience sound will become sped up when jumpscaring the player.
- During a lag spike, if the player is looking at a door that Eyes are behind, they can die instantly or take a lot of damage due to the intense lag slowing down FPS. This can commonly happen if Eyes appear when a player exits The Library.
- Eyes can spawn in the Courtyard, the Dining Room, the Greenhouse, and the Infirmary.
- Eyes cannot spawn in the Reception, the Library, the Electrical Room or during Seek's crescendo.
- It is possible to complete the game without encountering Eyes, but it is unlikely due to them having a higher chance of spawning in The Greenhouse.
- Eyes emit a slight scream whenever they damage a player.
- Eyes won't damage the player if Screech is present, closing their eyes to indicate this.
- This is to prevent Eyes from attacking the player while dodging Screech in case the player has to look in Eyes’ direction to fend it off.
- Eyes has a very large range of damaging players, they can damage and kill the player if they look at them from the farthest not deleted room.
- Eyes can sometimes spawn behind doors, making them (mostly) friendly.
- When using the Crucifix on Eyes there will be a delay before the crucifix is activated. This is likely to prevent accidentally wasting the crucifix if the player accidentally looks at Eyes.
- Eyes screams before the Crucifix is activated.
- Rush will despawn Eyes if it comes through and opens the next door.
- The chance of Eyes spawning is 3%, or .
- The chances of Eyes spawning in the Painting Puzzle Room is 0.000606060606% or .[citation needed]
- However, Eyes has a higher chance of spawning in the dining room in SUPER HARD MODE.
- Eyes can spawn right after Seek's chase.
- The chances of Eyes spawning in the Painting Puzzle Room is 0.000606060606% or .[citation needed]
- As of The Hunt update, Eyes can now spawn in dark rooms (if you don't count the Greenhouse), therefore working as a light source.
- Eyes can spawn at the same time with Rush, Ambush and A-60 (with modifiers).
- Eyes can also spawn right after exiting Halt's hallway.
- If Eyes spawn in a Dupe room, they will almost always spawn closest to the real door.
- This can happen with any of the Eyes-based Modifiers activated.
- Keep in mind that they will still spawn closer to the correct door in the Seek chase, even though these rooms do not contain Dupe doors.
- This can also occur with Subspace Tripmine doors in SUPER HARD MODE.
- This can happen with any of the Eyes-based Modifiers activated.
- When using the "Room for More" modifier, Eyes can spawn at the same time with A-60, making it hard to hear their whispers.
- Eyes can act like a light source in the Greenhouse and dark rooms.
- Eyes may sometimes spawn in the Infirmary, although this is likely a bug.
- Eyes will teleport more frequently the longer the player is in a room with them.
Super Hard Mode Modifications
- The chance of Eyes spawning in is significantly greater.
- They can even spawn in the following rooms:
- Jeff Shop.
- Any room during Seek's crescendo.
- They can even spawn in the following rooms:
Retro Mode Modifications
- Eyes spawn more often.
Modifiers
Bugs
- Eyes' whispers can appear before the spawn sound.
- There is currently a bug with the "Seeing Double" and "Four Eyes" modifier that allows the player to select this modifier, if the player has "Not Five Stars" and "Hotel Hell" achievement, even if the player does not have the "You Can't See Me" achievement.
- If player continues walking after taking damage from Eyes with "Injuries" modifier their walk speed will not change until player stops moving.
- There is a bug since The Backdoor update, where the player is forced to look at Eyes after Seek's cutscene, being completely unavoidable, as the player takes damage before being able to move the camera. This only happens with modifiers ("Always Watching", "Seeing Double" and "Four Eyes").
- This, together with "Last Breath" can make the game completely impossible unless Eyes don't spawn right in front of the door, with enough luck.
- If Eyes spawns and the next door is opened extremely fast, they won't despawn. Two sets of Eyes can be active at the same time because of this bug. It is a lot more common with speed modifiers.
- Sometimes, when the "Nosey" modifier is activated, Eyes has a chance of spawning outside of the room, but its light and sounds can still be heard.
Trivia
- Eyes was originally going to be named "The Lookman."[1]
- LSPLASH wanted to rename Eyes to "Stare" because they were often confused with Seek's eyes and didn’t follow the same naming scheme as the other entities, but he didn’t because he thought it was too late.[2]
- An entity in The Backdoor with a nearly identical mechanic was later named "Lookman."
- In The Mines, Eyes behave even more like Lookman, as they can now teleport. The difference is that Lookman will only teleport after damaging a player, while Eyes teleport randomly every few seconds.
- Redibles has expressed interest in a UGC hat/face accessory based on Eyes.[3]
- Eyes' texture is made of 38 individual eyes.
- However, their achievement icon features more eyes than the entity has in-game, with a total of 60 eyes, while in its crucifix achievement, they have 21 eyes.
- The remaining 17 eyes are hard to see due to how dark the crucifix icon is and how distorted the image looks when brighten
- However, their achievement icon features more eyes than the entity has in-game, with a total of 60 eyes, while in its crucifix achievement, they have 21 eyes.
- Eyes and Giggle are the only entities to attack using repeated, rapid-fire damage, unlike most entities which typically instantly kill or do a set of damage.
- Eyes used to be able to spawn behind the blocked doors in ventilation (vent) rooms, which would result in players completely avoiding them due to it being impossible to enter through such doors.
- In the Hotel+ update, vent rooms with blocked doors were removed, making this no longer an issue.
- Upon using the crucifix on Eyes, the entity will play a noise called "Repent".
- The repent sound in an edited version of Seek's unused repent noise.
- When using a crucifix on Eyes, the purplish aura emitted will turn dark red.
- In Tower Heroes, Eyes' death sound is the same as the sound emitted when they are being crucified.
- The player is actually able to look at Eyes, but only once the crucifix process has started.
- It is also possible to look at Eyes when the next door is opened but Eyes haven't disappeared yet. The entity stops dealing damage immediately after the next door is opened.
- It is possible to cancel using the crucifix on Eyes by quickly looking away from them, however, the player only has a second or two to do so.
- Before The Backdoor was added, Eyes didn't have a jumpscare; the player would just fall into the void. This also happened in Super Hard Mode.
- As of the Backdoor event, Eyes do have a jumpscare, in which the camera gets quickly pulled towards them.
- From a third-person point of view, the dying player grabs their head for a few seconds. Then, the player's head pops off, and they fall to the ground.
- As of the Backdoor event, Eyes do have a jumpscare, in which the camera gets quickly pulled towards them.
- It is believed that Eye's crucifix badge title is a reference to John Cena's "You Can't See Me" meme.
- Eyes' badge description is a reference to a line in "Face Off", an episode of Breaking Bad.
- Eyes' sparkles use a texture called "sanseyelol".
- This texture is also used for Halt and Guiding Light.
- The texture's name was changed to "why are you guys commenting on this" after an influx of users commented on the texture.
- This texture is also used for Halt and Guiding Light.
- Eyes' whispers come from this audio. This audio is also used by Halt.
- Eyes' attack sound comes from this sound effect.
- Eyes can spawn as early as Door 5 and as late as door 98.
- Very rarely, Eyes can spawn outside of the map.
- Eyes have spawned during the Seek chase multiple times when the developers were trolling KreekCraft.
- Eyes are one of the only entities that Guiding Light and El Goblino refer to with a different set of pronouns, using they/them when mentioning them instead of "it". The other such entity is Snare, although this could be due to multiple Snares often appearing in the same room.
- This implies that Eyes are actually a group of entities instead of one singular entity. However, this hasn’t been confirmed and is only speculation.
- Eyes were once in combat with Bob, according to El Goblino, who referred to them as "those eye thingies".
- There's an ambient sound similar to Eyes' attack sound that can be heard in the Hotel.
Strategy
- As soon as you hear their spawn cue, look down or away from the purple light. Eyes will disappear once the next door is opened.
- As Eyes are rather easy to deal with, it is best to not waste a Crucifix on them, unless a player encounters Void at the same time Eyes spawn.
