Not to be confused with its matured variant Grumble or Queen Grumble.

"You died to a Giggle.. Giggles tend to cling to ceilings."
- Guiding Light

Giggles are hostile entities that appear in The Mines, and in The Hotel with any of the Giggle modifier set enabled. They were introduced in The Mines Update.

Overview Appearance

Giggles are immature/baby Grumbles, and therefore have some resemblance to a Grumble. Giggles take on the appearance of a pinkish-light gray creature with an oval head and 4 tentacles extending from it, each with 2 joints. Its face has a mouth with a top and bottom row of 6 white teeth and 2 primary pink eyes; 2 smaller pink eyes above each primary eye extend towards the edge of its head. If the "Dripped Out" modifier is active, Giggles will wear one of the 6 random pair of sunglasses which protect it from being blinded by a Flashlight, Spotlight, Shakelight or Laser Pointer.

Behavior Behavior

Giggles are attached to the ceiling of a room with their face fronting the floor, periodically giggling, which players can hear if they are nearby. If a player walks under or very close to a Giggle in this position, the Giggle will immediately detach itself from the ceiling and drop down onto the player's face, almost completely blocking their field of vision. Over a short period of time, the Giggle will repeatedly bite the player, dealing 10 damage when falling on the player's face and 7 damage in every other bite, doing 3 bites if the player isn't helped by another player (maximum of 31 total damage), while the player performs an animation, attempting to dislodge the Giggle. After this period, the Giggle will be detached and thrown away from the player, leaving it lying on the ground, laughing and unable to be interacted with. After a few seconds, the Giggle will "fade away" and despawn.

A Giggle's damage sequence can be interrupted by having another player interact with said Giggle, which will cause it to dislodge and despawn.

Giggles are unable to attack players when they are stunned. Players can temporarily stun a Giggle by shining a Flashlight, Spotlight, Laser Pointer, or Shakelight on it, but not a Straplight. It can also be stunned by throwing items like Glowsticks directly at it. When stunned, it will let out a cry or grunt and attempt to cover its eyes with its upper left tentacle. After several seconds, the Giggle will return to its normal state and will be able to attack players again.

Giggles can be crucified with a Crucifix. It will be banished and award the "Not Funny" achievement.

Notes

  • Screech can spawn while Giggle is attacking.
  • Because Giggle's attack causes a loss of visibility, audio, and screen control, Screech's spawn could be difficult to recognize; players should attempt to look for Screech during and after a Giggle attack.
  • Giggles are able to spawn above doors and other places that make them impossible to avoid unless they are stunned.
  • Giggles can spawn as early as Door 101.
  • Giggles seem to spawn a lot in the early rooms, around 101–110. However, they tend to stop spawning or become extremely rare when the Player is near mini-boss locations or boss locations.
  • During a Giggle's attack, all sounds will have more echo and will be muffled. This effect will continue until the Giggle stops attacking.
  • When the “No Laughing Matter” modifier is active, Giggles will not laugh, and spawn anywhere.
  • When the "Dripped Out" modifier is active, Giggles will wear sunglasses with different frame colors.
    • Even when the Dripped Out modifier is enabled, Giggle can still be stunned by throwing a glowstick at it.

PARTY MODE

  • Deals more total damage although biting the player one less time. This also means it will get off the player faster.
    • Deals 15 damage when landing on the player's face (instead of 10), and deals 10 damage in every bite (instead of 7), however, the maximum bites are 2 (instead of 3), dealing a total of 35 damage if the player isn't helped by another player.
  • Giggle may spawn in any type of room, excluding Room 0.
    • Giggles can even spawn in rooms that they don't typically spawn in through normal gameplay.

BATTLE MODE

  • Deals more total damage although biting the player one less time. This also means it will get off the player faster.
    • Deals 21 damage when landing on the player's face (instead of 10), and the maximum bites are 2 (instead of 3), dealing a total of 35 damage if the player isn't helped by another player.
  • Giggle may spawn in any type of room, excluding Room 0.
    • Giggles can even spawn in rooms that they don't typically spawn in through normal gameplay.

Bugs Bugs

  • If a player is attacked by Void while being attacked by a Giggle, Screech and Eyes will not be able to deal damage to them, and they will be unable to interact with objects or players. Additionally, the camera shake caused by the attack will not stop.
    • Exactly like the previous bug, if a player is using Admin Panel and presses "DELETE ALL" button while Giggle is still attacking, Screech and Eyes will not be able to deal damage to them, and they will be unable to interact with objects or players. Additionally, the camera shake caused by the attack will not stop.
      • Additionally, when a Giggle is attacking a player, their model will disappear, but will still do damage. Its full model can still be seen when it stops attacking.
  • Room generation can cause rooms to overlap; if a Giggle is part of this overlapping, it can spawn no-clipped through walls and may still be able to attack players in close proximity.
  • Giggles can be stunned by Flashlights and Spotlights through walls, including through rooms that haven't been opened yet.
  • If any Giggle modifiers are enabled in The Hotel, Giggle will spawn in every room, even in Seek chases and Halt's Hallway.
  • If a player is attacked by a Giggle , then leaves the game, the Giggle will stay in its attacking animation, latched onto the player's face, until despawning.
  • As of The Great Outdoors Update, when a Giggle is crucified, its tentacles will sever and reattach themselves to the Giggle in the animation as it plays out.
    • The reason it appears to happen is because as the tentacles try to swirl around the Giggle's body, they begin to move as independent assets. This was likely a mistake during animation of some of the newer models.

Trivia Trivia

  • There is a scrapped interaction with Figure, which has been showed in tweets from developers, but is currently disabled in the actual game.
    • This event happened on the rare chance a Giggle (which had fallen) and Figure happened to be in the same room together, Figure would hear the Giggle laughing, would run over to them, and stomp on them, killing the Giggle in the process.
      • Currently, Giggle laughing can lure Figure, but Figure won't stomp on them.
  • Giggles can be interacted with with many items.
  • When collaborating with CaptainJackAttack in a YouTube video, RediblesQW revealed many facts about Giggle:
    • "Chuckle" was a potential name for Giggle.[2]
    • Giggles originally had black eyes.[3]
    • Giggles were originally intended to vary in color, but the idea was scrapped and given to Gloombats shortly after, this could of meant grumbles could of had colour varients[4]
    • Giggle was planned way prior to the development of The Mines.[5]
    • Giggles were supposed to be "all over" The Nest.[6] (Not added due to balancing.)
    • Giggles are a reference to the Headcrabs from the Half Life series, and Facehuggers from the Alien franchise.[7]
  • When The Mines released, people thought that Giggle had a different design, and some people still believe this, however RediblesQW has confirmed this isn't true, and Giggle's model has always been the same.
  • Giggles has the same jumpscare sound as Timothy, but quieter.
  • The "Just A Prank" achievement description is the popular internet meme quote, “It's just a prank, bro!”
  • The “Trickshot” achievement's description is likely a reference to the SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Krusty Krab Training Video”, in which a fish yells "HOOPLAH!", interrupting the presenter's speech several times before being hit by a brick.
  • The "X" on the Trickshot achievement image is a reference to the MLG hitmarker.
  • The animation for when a Giggle attacks the player is different from the animation seen from the other player's perspective.
  • When playing with the "Vacuum Sealed" modifier, it is possible to throw a Giggle's body inside the vacuum of a room.
  • Guiding Light's death messages state that Giggles are premature Grumbles, have sensitive eyes, and have a hard time staying quiet, thus their giggling.
    • As of now, Giggles and Grumbles, alongside with Screeches and Gloombats, are the only entities to be confirmed as a species.
  • Giggles closely resemble Screech in appearance. Many people in the community have theorized that a Giggle turns into a Screech upon contact with Seek, and there are multiple factors that proves that this might be true.
