Not to be confused with Queen Grumble or its baby variant, Giggle.

"You were eaten by what you call a Grumble... Grumbles are matured Giggles. They usually stay close to their nest, but always patrol for intruders."
- Guiding Light

Grumbles are hostile entities in DOORS and secondary antagonists in The Mines, primarily in The Nest. Their main purpose is to roam and hinder players' task in successfully activating all anchors which powers the bridge to escape. They were introduced entities in The Mines Update.

Overview Appearance

Grumbles are giant, beige-colored creatures, being larger, more matured versions of Giggle. They have 8 tentacles, a giant smiling mouth full of teeth, a tongue, small lips, two purplish-pink eyes with several smaller eyes above and below them with the same color and two lines above the mouth, supposedly being a nose.

Behavior Behavior

Grumbles initially make their appearance in The Nest, immediately following the end of the first Seek chase. A total of 5 Grumbles, including the Queen Grumble, patrol The Nest. Between the first and second/last chase in The Nest, Grumbles cannot enter the main pathway surrounding the two terminal entrances or the building that contains the room's instructions and Anchor A.

If a player is in the line of sight of a Grumble, it will start chasing them while laughing deeply. If its line of sight of a player is broken, it will stop chasing a player and continue to traverse The Nest. If a Grumble touches a player, it will "fling" the player away from them, stunning a player briefly and dealing 50 damage. The tentacles of a Grumble are collidable, but have no hitbox; only its main body can deal damage. Grumbles cannot hear players walking or dropping items, but is attracted to certain light sources turning on or off.

  • Fortunately, all Grumbles follow a series of Nodes which are like pathways coded by the game for the Grumbles to walk to the next Node prototype. When it spots a player, the path nodes don't go away but follows a specific Node path.

Using a Flashlight, Bulklight or Shakelight can disorientate a Grumble to the aforementioned light sources. If a player is being chased by a Grumble, they are able to shine a light source on its face to slow its movement speed, giving them more time to find a safe spot.

If a player is in a safe spot where they can be seen but not reached (such as the possible B anchor spawn with the broken wall), the Grumble that spots them will turn to face them, stare for a few seconds, before turning and going back onto patrol.

Notes

  • Grumble tentacles have no collision, so players can walk by them easily.
  • Grumbles can damage players through thin objects, such as the shearable vines in the far left Anchor B room.
  • Grumbles can be banished by a crucifix as of The Content Update, however the queen cannot.
  • Grumble's Path Nodes (AI Walking Paths) by the entrance of each Anchor Room has now been nerfed prior to the Content Update.
  • When godmode is enabled, Grumbles will ignore players and won't chase after them. The same goes for the Queen Grumble.

Door Jumpscare

1st Person

Grumble will grab the player with its tentacles, open its mouth, then close it, killing a player. This only occurs if the player has 50 or less HP.

3rd Person

Grumble will grab the player with its tentacles, then bite into them, devouring the upper half of their body.

Trivia Strategy

  • Put volume to max as Grumbles have a roaming sound. This is useful especially against the Queen Grumble who does not laugh at all.
  • When a Grumble chases you, run to the gate or run to a nearby room, Grumbles cannot go into small spaces.
  • You are able to sense any Grumble (apart from the Queen Grumble) chasing you, because they laugh.
  • Grumbles (sometimes more than one) have a tendency to camp around the C Anchor area, in that case, try to find small gaps of time in between to escape them.
  • Take advantage of the screen shaking; when there's no shaking, it more than likely means you're safe to enter the tunnels.
  • If a Grumble is chasing you, look for tight gaps or any doors or corners that can protect you.
  • Once you have powered the bridge, run to the door as fast as you can.
  • It is good to have a bright light source to shine on the Grumbles, as this can make them take a wrong turn, leading them away.
  • If you see a Grumble from below and you are at the top floor, get to a safe space and wait for it to go away.
  • If two Grumbles are on each side, and you are in between, go to the side of the tunnel of where they'll collide as they both will turn around. (Likelihood: likely)

Bugs Bugs

  • If a Grumble hits a player right next to one of the lockers in front of the mesh wall, players may be clipped behind the locker and will be unable to do anything other than move around a little bit.
  • Grumbles will occasionally zoom around the nest at a very fast speed. This can only be seen using either the Guidance candy, or the Moonlight Float. Both of which allow you to see the Grumbles' movements through walls.
  • After The Content Update, Grumbles are no longer able to be blinded by a Bulklight, a Flashlight, or a Shakelight. This is likely a bug.
  • There are certain locations where Grumbles are prone to getting stuck; namely, next to the room containing the nearer of the two Coffin Corner C anchors and at the entrance to the loop containing the left side D anchor.
    • The Grumbles will usually unstick themselves given enough time.
    • If both grumbles meet at a tight dead end, they will be stuck forever bumping into each other and unable to move.

Trivia Trivia

  • Before Grumbles were given an official name, people referred to it as "Screech Worm".
  • The Grumbles were voiced by undeadking345.
  • The name and description of the Grumble crucifix achievement references the famous proverb: "The bigger they are, the harder they fall!"
  • Prior to The Content Update, all Grumbles would cause the Crucifix to fail. As of now, this only applies to the Queen Grumble.
  • The Grumbles that roam around The Nest are called "Grumbo" in the game's files. This includes the Queen Grumble.
  • Grumbles can sometimes be heard from door 151. This is because The Nest does not unload until 5 rooms after.
  • Grumbles will crawl through The Nest by using 5 of their tentacles in the front, while dragging 3 more behind.
  • All Grumbles have 8 tentacles, including the Queen Grumble.
  • According to Guiding Light, Grumbles roam The Nest to protect their queen.
  • Grumbles are Giggles after they've reached maturity.
    • Giggles have 12 teeth, 6 eyes, and 4 tentacles. However, as it grows, it seems to acquire more; Grumbles have 24 teeth, 11 eyes, and 8 tentacles.
    • The Queen Grumble has more unique features than the standard Grumble, such as a stretch mark on its forehead and slightly different color and bigger size.
