Looting is a game mechanic which allows the player to open various containers and find items or gold. The number of things that can be obtained from looting may vary.
Overview
If the player is near a container, a hand icon () with a question mark will appear. This indicates that the container has not yet been searched. Opening the container will remove the question mark symbol.
- On PC, players will have to press E to open the container.
- On Mobile, players will have to press the pointer button near the top-left corner of the crouch button.
- On Xbox, players will have to press to open the container.
- On PlayStation, players will have to press the Square button to open the container.
Notes
- Having a form of light source will heavily reduce the chance of finding another one through looting unless said light source is low on power.
- If an item is present in a container, the container will make another sound when opened.
- Timothy is the only entity the player can encounter from looting.
- Before The Mines was released, Gold was instantly collected when the crosshair was hovered over it for about half a second.
- There are times where the items that aren't obtainable overlap the drawers, even Timothy.
- The only items that can't be obtained from looting containers are the solution paper, library books, puzzle paintings, electrical room key, candles, circuit breaker switches, shakelight, and the scanner.
- Candles are obtained on tables.
- The scanner can be obtained from looting in Super Hard Mode!!!.
- An item will always be in the top chest of a five-chest, or Rolltop drawer.
- The "coin collection" effect after picking up gold will be severely reduced if player has bad connection.
- During the 2023 April Fools Event, every time you loot too quick, Greed pops up on the screen.
- Continuously collecting coins, etc. ignoring Greed's cooldown will most likely be fatal and end your run immediately.
