"Psst..."
- Screech when warning a player of their presence.
Screech is a hostile entity in DOORS that resides in The Hotel and The Mines. In The Hotel, they have a chance to spawn in any dark room; in The Mines, they can spawn in (almost) any room, regardless of light level.
Appearance
Screeches appear as spherical entities with pale pink skin, with most of their body being coated in a pitch-black and lustrous substance that retains a slimy or gooey consistency. They possess 6 tentacles that are attached around its body in a circular pattern, with a dry, sinister, yet unsettling smile with two glowing white eyes. It has pearly-white human-like teeth with red gums.
Behavior
Screeches are able to spawn in any dark room past Door 1, or rooms darkened by Rush or formerly Ambush. Upon spawning, they will fade in and float near the player, and after a few moments, a player will hear a quiet static sound and a slight shaking of the screen. Following that, Screech will emit a "psst" sound. If players do not look directly at them within a certain amount of time, it will bite the player, dealing 40 damage. If players do look directly at it, Screech will scream, and quickly despawn. Actively using or being near any light sources decreases the chance of Screech spawning. Light sources can be shared with other players, and can be "stacked."
In The Mines, Screech can spawn in any room regardless of it being dark or not, and can attack as early as door 101. It will not spawn in Seek chases, Halt's hallway, The Electrical Room, The Adit, The Dam or The Woods, unless certain modifiers are enabled. (Not the case anymore as Modifiers are disabled upon transitioning floors)
Notes
- Light sources only reduce the chance of Screech appearing, but do not make disappear entirely, so it can still spawn while using the light.
- Screech can be banished by the crucifix, but only if players do not look at it. Screech is chained in the air by the blue chains while flailing its tentacles and shrieking. It is then forcefully put into the hexagram below it with a disorienting, slimy-sounding smack.
- It is possible for Screech to follow players out of a dark room.
- If a player is close to a dark room, Screech will still spawn.
- Players can avoid and despawn Screech by hiding in a closet or under a bed, or climbing on a ladder.
- This is most likely due to balancing reasons as to make it more fair for a player.
- Since Screech is a client-sided entity, ping factor should not have any effect on how it attacks.
- Other players and spectators cannot see Screech spawn or attack you.
- It is possible to look at Screech before its sound cue plays.
- When Screech spawns, a very quiet static sound will play, which signals Screech is there before its "psst!" sound cue.
- A player's camera will shake slightly whenever Screech spawns in, which is more noticeable when standing still.
- The shake is related to the sound cue. During the static sound, the camera shakes, and right when Screech’s "psst" sound plays, the shaking will stop.
- Before the Hotel+ Update, Screech could not spawn in rooms that were darkened by Rush or Ambush.
- Screech can only spawn while in full-dark mode. When a player is in full-dark mode, everything except for a small light (or possible light sources) is pitch black.
- Dark rooms become full-dark when entered.
- Prior to the Hotel+ Update, rooms darkened by Rush and Ambush were never full-dark.
- Screech spawns directly behind players, so it is recommended for players to proceed in a straight line or at a 90-degree angle to help detect where Screech is.
- Screech is most prominently found either on the ceiling, at eye level, or on the floor. When dealing with Screech, players should check those places first. Rarely, Screech will spawn directly beside players. As this is not common, players should only look next to them after they have confirmed Screech has not spawned behind.
- The "psst" sound Screech makes can also occur outside dark rooms, though this is solely to startle a player,[1] and Screech will not spawn.
- The fake audio cue is noticeably quieter and softer than the real one, allowing players to know if Screech has spawned or not.
- Players can easily confirm the audio cue as fake if they are not currently in a dark room (Hotel only).
- The fake audio cue is also not a player. But what or whoever made this sound, is truly unknown, but it is speculated that it is Screech faking out players solely to scare them, similarly to Rush.
- The fake audio cue may have also been made by El Goblino, as he has stated he makes most of the noises throughout The Hotel, even though players shouldn’t really be able to hear it from very far away.
- The fake audio cue is noticeably quieter and softer than the real one, allowing players to know if Screech has spawned or not.
- In The Nest, multiple piles of dead Screeches are scattered throughout.
- If the dark room in question is a locked room, Guiding Light will eventually appear and highlight the exit and room key.
- If the room has a variety of doors and drawers to open and search, It may be ideal to wait for Guiding Light to perform its highlight. If a player has a light source, It is highly recommended to operate such light source.
- As of the Hotel+ Update, Guiding Light also highlights the exit and key in light rooms. However, this takes much longer.
- This also reduces the chance of Screech spawning.
- It's possible for Screech to appear while crawling through a vent. Players might not be able to see Screech in this scenario and it is therefore recommended to quickly get out of the vent.
- Before the Hotel+ update it was also possible for Screech to spawn in a closet. In this situation, players weren’t able to look at Screech, and the only way to avoid it was to quickly hop out of the hiding spot.
- Screech will have a lower chance of spawning when there are more players.
- Despite not spawning in Halt's hallway, Screech can still sometimes follow players into it (more likely in The Mines, or if the room before the hallway is dark in The Hotel).
- Screech, in its plushie form, was able to be seen on the fireplace in the Lobby.
- Despite The Basement being a dark room, Screech has a lower chance of spawning there.
- This is because players need more time to open the next door, compared to the average time needed to open the next door of a small basement.
- Screech instantly despawns if a cutscene is activated.
- Sometimes, Screech will have its audio cue come late for people with high ping, thus leading to a attack without a warning.
Super Hard Mode
- Screech appears more frequently and makes a different sound when caught, instead playing a sped-up version of the woman yelling in the meme "Why are you running?".
Retro Mode
- Screech spawns more often and can spawn on any room.
- Screech will explode when caught in eye contact.
Modifiers
- If the 'Bad Electrical Work', 'Power Shortage', or 'Lights Out' modifiers are enabled, Dark Rooms are more common, increasing the chances of Screech spawning. With the modifier "Lights Out", every room will be a dark room, allowing Screech to spawn in most rooms.
- 'I'm Everywhere' allows Screech to spawn in any room, including the rooms in Seek's chase and Halt's Hallway.
- It also allows Screech to spawn during minigames (such as the Door 50 combination lock and the Door 100 power box puzzle) and during cutscenes.
- Players shouldn't use a light source if they have the 'I'm Everywhere' modifier on, as Screech can still spawn if the lights are on.
- 'Think Fast' and it's extension, 'Think Faster' increases the chance of Screech spawning and decreases the window for players to look at it.
- Screech has the following changes in SUPER HARD MODE!!!
- Dark rooms will occur more frequently.
- Screech has a higher chance of spawning.
- When dodging Screech's attack, it plays a sped-up version of the meme "Why are you running?"
- In the past, if the modifier "Lights Out" was active, Screech would not spawn in any room, because the game was considering the rooms were not dark because the dark room sound never plays. After THE HUNT update, this does not apply anymore.
- If the modifier "Trick or Treat" is active, and the player gets the "Psst" effect from a piece of candy, Screech will spawn regardless of what room the player is in, similar to "I'm Everywhere".

Bugs
- After the first Mines Seek chase, Screech may spawn while you are in a Minecart and is harder to spot.
- There is a multiplayer glitch where if a player gets a dark room on Door 47/48, and Screech spawns, but someone opens The Library door up, Screech may spawn in The Library. The same goes for the Seek chase and The Electrical Room. This is no longer possible after The Mines update.
- Screech can very rarely spawn without the slime effect on it due to parts not loading in.
- The chances of this will increase if a player uses high graphics, due to the slime material being reflective.
- Screech can spawn in light rooms without the 'I'm Everywhere' modifier, only by bugs however.
- This is possible if Shadow spawns in a dark room, having a chance to make the room light, but the game thinks the room is still dark so it allows Screech to spawn.
- If a player is teleported by Void or Glitch while Screech is following them, it will instantly damage players, without any warning or jumpscare.
- It is thought this happens because a player is anchored and unable to move.
- Exactly like the previous bug, if a player is doing the Circuit Breaker Puzzle, and Screech is around them, it will instantly damage players without any warning or jumpscare.
- This also happens probably because a player is anchored and unable to move during the puzzle.
- Since The Backdoor Update, Screech will be able to spawn in the Circuit Breaker Puzzle and in the final elevator cutscene in The Electrical Room (if Rush broke the lights), being impossible to avoid.
- This also happens with certain modifiers, like Lights Out and I'm Everywhere.
- If Screech is around a player, and they interact with a hiding spot multiple times in quick succession, the text "Something is stopping you from hiding..." will appear for an unknown reason.[2]
Trivia
- Screech might be named after the fact that it makes loud screams other than its "psst" sound.
- Screech is one of the entities to be featured in a thumbnail (Tower Heroes Event). The others being Figure (Tower Heroes Event), Seek (Before Hotel+), Dupe (After Hotel+), The Lookman (After The Hunt), and Gloombats (Current (The Mines)).
- When dead players are spectating, Screech is not shown. It is unknown if this is a bug or not.
- Screech was added less than a week before release, due to RediblesQW getting the idea from a nightmare he had the night before.
- It is also implied that Screech resembles the actual monster Redibles's had in a nightmare, only with less tentacles.
- The "psst" that Screech makes was also from a nightmare RediblesQW's had.
- Screech is one of the few entities with their own official Makeship plushie, the others being Seek, Figure, and El Goblino.
- During the Hotel+ Update, the plush was in the lobby.
- Screech has 3 UGC items: the Screech Head, the Screech Bag, and the Screech Headphones.
- Redibles stated that he may make a UGC item in reference to Screech's bottom half.
- The reason this didn't originally exist was because RediblesQW wanted players to choose their skin tone and face to go along with the head.
- Redibles stated that he may make a UGC item in reference to Screech's bottom half.
- There are two codes that reference Screech.
- The SCREECHSUCKS code is a reference to Screech's notorious reputation in the DOORS Community.
- PSST is another code referencing the sound Screech makes before attacking an unsuspecting player.
- Like Timothy, instead of latching onto a player, Screech jumpscares the screen.
- Screech is one of the five entities (the second - Glitch, the third - Dread, the fourth - Haste, and the fifth - Giggle) that always turn player's camera to face them.
- As long as players have light sources, it is possible to complete a successful run without encountering Screech, although it may be very unlikely due to it being able to spawn in The Greenhouse, which are all dark rooms (excluding Door 99).
- Screech's audio in SUPER HARD MODE is also used in LSPLASH's other game, Ragdoll Universe, once a player joins a game, the audio will play but a short version will play.
- Screech’s I-See-You achievement description “Peek-a-boo!” might be referencing to a kids’ game called Peek-A-Boo, where someone will put their hands on their face, covering it up, then removing there hands off, and saying: “Peek-a-boo!”.
- Banishing Screech with the Crucifix will prevent it from spawning for 5 minutes, as said in the achievement for doing so.
- The description of the “I Hate You” achievement references the onion carriage scene in Shrek 2. It is also a reference to Screech's reputation among the DOORS community.
- Screech is one of the only entities that can be banished with a different animation. The others being Giggle, Seek, Grumble, Figure and Gloombats.
- When a player uses the Crucifix, the sound of Screech is low pitched and distorted when a player looks at Screech.
- Screech doesn't appear in The Rooms and The Backdoor, even in the darkest rooms.
- Screech can appear during Seek's crescendo, only if a dark room occurs during its crescendo, but not during the chase itself.
- Because Dark Rooms can spawn as early as Door 9, and Rush can break the lights as early as Door 2, it's possible to encounter Screech before Dupe.
- RediblesQW has implied that Lightning Splash did the voice for Screech, although he is unsure.
- The slime covering Screech might hint at a connection to Seek.
- Additionally, Screech's anatomy is very similar to a Giggle, suggesting they are an identical species.
- Screech has the ability to watch a player in a dark room without going up to them.
- Prior to Hotel+, Screech was one of the only entities that can attack players if they are hiding.
- As of now, Screech will despawn whenever a player enters a hiding spot, and occasionally displays the “Something is stopping you from hiding...” despite allowing players to enter.
- Prior to Hotel+, Screech was one of the only entities that can attack players if they are hiding.
- Screech is vulnerable to heat. LSPLASH confirmed that it would "probably die" if put into an oven for six minutes at 500° F (260° C).[Citation Needed]
- A lot of people believe Screech is based off of a child, regarding the nightmare, the real inspiration of it. This is because Screech has a high voice and tricks players by sneaking up on them and making a sound behind them.
- This relates to a little game kids play on people by sneaking up on them by hiding and making a small noise to confuse them. This is called a sneak attack, but in a way the person about to sneak up wants to distract them before noticing them.
- This is a possible reason of why it screams when players finds it, as if the person finds the child who tried to trick them.
- This relates to a little game kids play on people by sneaking up on them by hiding and making a small noise to confuse them. This is called a sneak attack, but in a way the person about to sneak up wants to distract them before noticing them.
- Screech is most likely a Giggle/Other form of the entity that was infected/possessed by Seek, judging by multiple dead Screech being found across door 150 beside Grumbles and the ending of the Mines where the Queen Grumble suffers the same fate.
- Screech was LSPLASH's favorite entity to work on because it scared his friends.
- El Goblino’s dialogue about the Tower Heroes Event which says "Had a dream last night, was being chased by those screechy-düds, uff... but I was saved! So it's okay." implies that there are multiple Screeches, as he doesn’t refer to any of the other entities in plurals.
- RediblesQW, a DOORS developer, said on Twitter that "the back of Screech's model isn't well designed at all and is quite disturbing..."[3]
- When Screech appears both in The Hotel and The Mines there is a chance its goo/slime doesn't appear due to an error, this became a meme in DOORS community called "Bald Screech".
- Screech is considered "cute" by many people in the DOORS community.
- Screech was originally going to be named Screature[4].
