The Shears are an item that appears in The Hotel, The Mines, and The Outdoors. It was originally an item that was obtainable with the use of exploits in The Hotel+ Update, but were re-implemented in The Mines Update.

Usage

The Shears can be found in the small toolsheds in The Courtyard and The Mines. They are used to cut vines, allowing the player to either access bound chests or enter new areas such as The Outdoors. They can only be used five times before breaking.

Pros

• Guaranteed to spawn in The Hotel and The Outdoors.
• Can cut vine-covered chests in The Mines and The Outdoors.
• Can be used to cut vines and make shortcuts in The Nest.
• Can be used to access The Outdoors, with the help of a Skeleton Key.

Cons

• Can only be used 5 times before it breaks.
• Only one can be held per player.
• Has only two reasons of use in The Hotel.
  • It is strongly advised to put the Shears in The Rift for usage in The Mines, when obtaining it in The Courtyard, especially in preparation for The Nest & potentially for usage in said room.

Trivia

• When Ghostly Wowzers was asked about the vine-covered door in The Greenhouse's final room, he said that it would be answered in the following update, which was likely The Great Outdoors Update.
  • This was likely changed to be the basement entrance in The Courtyard.
    • However, after the remaster of The Greenhouse, a new larger door was added to the last Greenhouse room, this time not obstructed by vines.
• The Shears were originally found under The Courtyard out of bounds.
  • It could be picked up and stored in the Rift, as they act like any regular items would.
  • The Shears were removed from under The Courtyard in The Modifiers Update.
  • They are still found here using the SUPER HARD MODE!!! modifier. It is possible to get them using a Banana Peel to clip through the floor.
• After The Hunt Update, the Shears were temporarily replaced by the Evil Dollar, which triggered the anti-cheat instantly if obtained. They were reverted back in The Mines Update.
• It is possible to find Shears in vine-covered chests by using a Multitool.
• This is one of the two items added into The Hotel in The Mines Update.
  • The other one is the Alarm Clock.
  • If you use Out of Battery candy while having Shears on inventory, it will be recharged due to a bug.
• There are plans to add more places for the Shears to be used.^{[citation needed]}
• Shears can also be obtained trading with Louie.
  • Shears have a guaranteed chance to be dropped by Louie when giving them a Starlight Jug.
  • Shears have a chance of 50% to be dropped by Louie when giving them a Starlight Bottle or a Moonlight Candle.
  • Shears have a chance of 33.33% to be dropped when using a Crucifix against Louie.
  • Shears have a chance of 33.33% to be dropped by Louie when giving them a Skeleton Key, a Spotlight or a Gween Soda.
  • Shears have a chance of 25% to be dropped by Louie when giving them a Starlight Vial, an Alarm Clock, a Laser Pointer, a Shakelight or a Smoothie.
• In The Mines Update, a bug appeared that affected 3 items, one of them being the Shears, (the others were the Skeleton Key and the Crucifix). Dropping the item right after it was used but before it was registered by the server would make the item not disappear. In the Shears, due to its durability mechanic, the durability would be substracted doing this bug, but it could reach a negative durability without disappearing. This bug was patched in The Content Update.
  • It is still possible to see Shears with negative durability if they were saved in the Rift after doing the bug while it worked, but using them once would make them instantly disappear.
