"Five uses, holds secrets"
- Pre-Run shop before returning
The Skeleton Key is a type of key that was returned to the game as part of the Hotel+ Update. This item can be bought for 300 at Jeff Shop, and can rarely be found in containers or on top of tables.
Usage
The Skeleton Key can be used on the Skeleton Door in The Infirmary. After being used on the Skeleton Door, it dissolves and allows players to enter the room inside, which contains the Herb of Viridis and multiple drawers which contain large quantities of Gold. The Herb will provide the player some health and the passive effect of regenerating 10 health per door open for the player, for the rest of the run. The effect is removed after death and does not reappear when a Revive is used.
Other than being used to access the Herb of Viridis, the Skeleton Key can be used to enter The Rooms. The entrance is hidden behind a destroyed room around Door 60. Players should flick a lever found in the The Basement, use two lockpicks on The Rooms' "door", before being able to use the Skeleton Key, which unlatches the final lock, allowing players to enter The Rooms.
The Skeleton Key can also function as a lockpick, as it can open any door with a lock on it, excluding the two lockpick-required locks, The Library's escape door, and chains on The Rooms' entrance. Much like the lockpick, the Skeleton Key will be destroyed when used on a regular lock.
Notes
- It is only possible to have one Skeleton Key at a time. If the player already has a Skeleton Key in their inventory and tries to pick one up from either Jeff's Shop or from a container, a faint '1/1' flashes on their screen, similarly to when carrying the maximum amount of lockpicks or vitamins.
- For this reason, it is recommended that players decide if they'd like to unlock The Infirmary's Skeleton Door or The Rooms's entrance before using the Skeleton Key.
- It is not recommended to use a Skeleton Key to unlock regular doors.
- For this reason, it is recommended that players decide if they'd like to unlock The Infirmary's Skeleton Door or The Rooms's entrance before using the Skeleton Key.
- Unlike the crucifix, the Skeleton Key is always guaranteed to spawn in Jeff's Shop.
- The Skeleton Key has a chance of spawning in containers around the map, though the chances are extremely low.
- The Skeleton Key can be used to open locked treasure chests.
- The Skeleton Key can be used to open the Circuit Breaker Puzzle door in The Electrical Room.
- The Skeleton Key cannot open the regular locks in The Rooms entrance.
- Putting the Skeleton Key into the rift allows players to get Herb Of Viridis in the same run as one where Rooms is opened.[1]
- The Skeleton Key can be obtained during special events, such as chases.
- In some extremely rare cases, a Crucifix and a Skeleton Key can be found in the same room.
Initial Removal
Before the Hotel+ Update, it was available to buy in the shop for 100 Knobs at the start of the round, and its description was "Five uses, holds secrets."
The Skeleton Key was removed from DOORS for unknown reasons, though it is suggested that the tool was removed as it was unbalanced and its functionality was already replaced in-part by the lockpick tool.
When equipped, it could unlock any locked doors without requiring the player to search for a key, with the exception of the key not working on the lock in Room 50. The item had a limited durability, and it would break after opening only one door with it. The lockpick has the same function.
The Skeleton Key was re-added in the Hotel+ Update, being able to purchase it in Jeff’s shop or being found in drawers, on tables, etc.
