"Five uses, holds secrets"
- Pre-Run shop before The Hotel+ Update
The Skeleton Key is a rare key that can be used to open any locked door and to unlock special Skull Locks[1]. This item can be bought for
300 at Jeff Shop, and can rarely be found in containers or on top of tables.
Usage
The Skeleton Key has two functions. It can unlock any locked door or container, which uses one durability, or it can unlock any Skull Locks, which consumes 4 durability.
Skull Locks can only be opened with a Skeleton Key. There are currently 3 ways these locks can spawn:
- In The Hotel and The Mines, midway through a run as an entrance to a Rift.
- In The Infirmary, to unlock the Herb Of Viridis effect.
- Entrances to subfloors, being the entrance to The Outdoors at Door 90 and 99, and the entrance to The Rooms at Door 60.
Notes
- It is only possible to have one Skeleton Key at a time. If the player already has a Skeleton Key in their inventory and tries to pick one up from either Jeff Shop or from a container, a faint '1/1' flashes on their screen, similarly to when carrying the maximum amount of Lockpicks or Vitamins.
- For this reason, it is recommended that players decide if they'd like to unlock The Infirmary's Skeleton Door or The Rooms' entrance before using the Skeleton Key.
- This is no longer the case as of The Great Outdoors Update, since both can be opened with a single key.
- For this reason, it is recommended that players decide if they'd like to unlock The Infirmary's Skeleton Door or The Rooms' entrance before using the Skeleton Key.
- Unlike the Crucifix, the Skeleton Key is always guaranteed to spawn in Jeff Shop in The Hotel.
- The Skeleton Key has a chance of spawning in containers around the map, though the chances are extremely low.
- The Skeleton Key can be used to open locked treasure chests.
- The Skeleton Key can be used to open the Circuit Breaker Puzzle door in The Electrical Room.
- The Skeleton Key cannot open the regular locks in The Rooms entrance.
- Putting the Skeleton Key into a rift allows players to get Herb Of Viridis in the same run as one where Rooms is opened.[2]
- The Skeleton Key can be obtained during special events, such as chases.
- The Skeleton Key cannot be used on Generators.

Bugs
- It is also possible to keep a Skeleton Key after The Content Update by interacting with a padlock then equipping the Skeleton Key when the end of the HOLD bar is at a perfect frame at the end.
- This was patched shortly after.
- When using the Skeleton Key in PARTY MODE (where it has infinite uses) once, it will become invisible for the rest of the run, and the player won't be able to drop it.
- This was later fixed with Battle mode release, since there Skeleton Keys now has 5 uses
Patched Bugs
- After The Mines Update, it was possible to keep a Skeleton Key after opening a padlock by dropping the item at the same time you unlocked the door, effectively allowing for it to be used infinitely if able to consistently do it. This bug was patched in The Content Update.
Trivia
- The Skeleton Key is likely a reference to the Skeleton Door At Room 310 in Spooky's Jump-scare mansion.[3]
- The Skeleton Key originally broke after only one use. This was changed after The Great Outdoors Update
- This behavior was added in PARTY MODE a few months earlier.
- The Skeleton Key can be obtained trading with Louie.
- The Skeleton Key has a guaranteed chance to be dropped by Louie when giving them a Starlight Jug.
- The Skeleton Key has a chance of 50% to be dropped by Louie when giving them a Starlight Bottle or a Moonlight Candle.
- The Skeleton Key has a chance of 33.33% to be dropped when using a Crucifix against Louie.
- The Skeleton Key has a chance of 33.33% to be dropped by Louie when giving them Shears, a Bulklight or a Gween Soda.
- The Skeleton Key has a chance of 25% to be dropped by Louie when giving them a Starlight Vial, an Alarm Clock, a Laser Pointer, a Shakelight or a Smoothie.
- Item Skins for the Skeleton Key were added in The Great Outdoors Update.
- Skull Doors take up to 4 uses of the Skeleton Key.
- The Skeleton Key had an unused icon uploaded in the DOORS Wiki by Ghostly Wowzers that is identical to the current icon but with a slightly more sand yellow-ish tint.[4]
Removed Content
- Before The Hotel+ Update, it was available to buy in the Pre-Run Shop for 100 Knobs at the start of the round, and its description was "Five uses, holds secrets."
- The Skeleton Key was removed from DOORS for unknown reasons, though it is suggested that the tool was removed as it was unbalanced and its functionality was already replaced in-part by the Lockpick tool.
- When equipped, it could unlock any locked doors without requiring the player to search for a key, with the exception of the key not working on the lock in The Library. The item had a limited durability, and it would break after opening only one door with it. The Lockpick has the same function.
