The Basement (also known as the Large Basement, or Mega-Gate Room), is a large, underground room that always spawns on Door 61. It plays a key component to access The Rooms.
Overview
The Basement is a guaranteed room to spawn in The Hotel. It consists of a maze-like structure with multiple gates blocking certain areas, three vents that lead to other areas, and a lever that spawns on a random wall in the room. The Basement also contains barrels, pipes, tables and Containers, which spawn around the room, busted lights, as well a cobwebs, flies, mould on the stone walls and an arched ceiling. To get to The Basement, like all lever-activated gate rooms, players must go down one, in this case, one of two stairwells, that branch from the top floor, containing a gate blocking the door to the next room. The Basement always spawns as a dark room.
Accessing The Rooms
The Basement plays a key role in order for players to access The Rooms.
When entering Door 61, players must enter one of two branched stairwells in order to access The Basement. The Basement, unlike its smaller counterparts, will be much bigger and harder to navigate. The lever to proceed to the next room and to unlock the gate to the entrance of The Rooms will spawn on a random wall in The Basement. Sometimes the lever spawns close to the stairwells, making it easier for players to reach, but usually the lever will spawn far away. Once the lever has been activated, both gates will open, providing the player access to the The Rooms' entrance.
Notes
- The Basement's room generation is confusing and maze-like, as well as the lever can randomly spawn on almost any wall, meaning it’s hard to memorise.
- If the player waits around a minute, Guiding Light will light up the lever in order to proceed, the doors that connect The Basement to the stairwells, and the door to the next room.
- The Basement is a dark room, meaning Screech will spawn as usual, but the likeliness for it to spawn is lower than normal dark rooms. This is due to players needing more time to locate the lever to progress.
- Curious Light's ambience can be softly heard when navigating The Basement. This happens because the entrance to The Rooms is nearby.
- The player can avoid Rush and Ambush if they hide in The Basement. They will also receive the 'In Plain Sight' achievement if they haven't obtained it.
- If Shadow spawns in The Basement, the entire room will be bright even if Rush goes through. This makes finding the lever much more easier.
- Eyes has a chance to spawn within The Basement, but majority of the time it will spawn on the top floor.
- In The Basement, like all Containers, Timothy can spawn in them.
- If Jack spawns when a player opens the door, it will only turn the top floor and the branched stairwells red and leave The Basement as normal.
- Items such as Batteries, Bandages and Lighters can spawn on tables and inside Containers. Large amounts of Gold can also be found.
Counterparts
Small Basements
The Basement has a counterpart known as small basements, which appear very similar to The Basement, except only one stairwell will spawn instead of two, the room will be significantly smaller, all lights will be dimly lit, and it will only contain one vent. Small basements will always spawn with the exact same room generation, and unlike The Basement, can randomly spawn in most rooms as early as Door 5. A random side room will generate behind the door to the other side of the gate room.
Courtyard Basement
The Courtyard Basement can be found within The Courtyard. It contains a trapdoor covered with vines, which require the Shears to open. Once the Shears have been used, players enter down a flight of stairs, into a room that is similar to small basements. This room will contains a large amount of Gold. Although, players must be careful of Snare, who inhabits the floor and the entrance.
Trivia
- When the Hotel+ Update initially released, the door behind the gate was automatically locked, so players needed to find a Room Key as well as the lever. This was shortly removed likely due to it being too hard and time consuming.
- The Basement and small basements replaced what was an older version. The old basements originally had a simpler design. The rooms had no vents, and the layout was different.
- The Basement and small basements also replaced an alternate lever-activated gate room called Mini-Libraries. Mini-Libraries were rooms that had a few bookshelves and a lever hidden somewhere within. It was removed most likely as the developers wanted to focus on the decoration and gameplay of the basements.
- The Basement is one of the most hated rooms by the community and speedrunners because of it's huge size, darkness, and bad navigation.
- There is an extremely rare bug when a small basement spawns the room straight after The Basement. Pulling the lever in The Basement will also activate the gate to the small basement which follows after.
- This happens because the lever from The Basement will open every existing gate currently, including others; this was made so it can also open the gate in Door 60, to access The Rooms.
- The Basement was added in the Hotel+ Update.
